Unlike ten years ago, when sitting in a counseling room to talk about immigrant families, the first thing they ask is often not "which country is easier", but "what problem does our family's identity solve in this situation. Behind this is a clear shift: overseas immigration is evolving from a single point of action to a set of composite decisions centered around long-term family arrangements.
The same signal has repeatedly appeared in multiple reports by Hurun Research Institute in recent years: high net worth individuals seek stability in their assets domestically and progress in their assets overseas, with overseas allocation concentrated in mature markets such as Hong Kong, the United States, and Singapore; Meanwhile, over half of high net worth families still have plans to send their children abroad for education, with an average planning age of around 16 years old, and even earlier for ultra-high net worth families. When identity, education, and assets are placed on the same family chart, the question of whether to immigrate becomes much more specific.
1、 What are families discussing about immigration today
Many people's imagination of immigration is still limited to "moving their family and changing their nationality". But in reality, when it comes to consulting families, their demands can be divided into several layers.
Some families pursue educational paths: whether their children need a local identity to lower tuition fees, extend their stay, facilitate internships and employment if they plan to attend high school or university in a certain country in the future. Some families require a tax status different from their primary country of residence or a status that allows for long-term residency and facilitates the opening of overseas accounts for asset allocation. Some families are seeking the right to choose: they do not intend to move in immediately, but hope to preserve a possibility for themselves and their families to "live in the past" in the next three to five years. Some families are business owners, and their identity arrangements are considered together with the company's overseas expansion, overseas shareholding, and family inheritance.

These demands correspond to completely different paths. Education oriented families may be more concerned about the length of residency and the accompanying terms for their children; Asset oriented households are more concerned about tax residency determination and whether actual residence is required; Choice oriented families are more concerned about the application cycle and maintenance costs. Using the same term 'immigration' can easily lead to choosing the wrong direction.
2、 Six repeatedly weighed decision dimensions
Breaking down these demands, families actually weigh six dimensions when making decisions.
The first is destination country matching. The identity programs in different countries vary greatly in terms of residency requirements, language requirements, proof of funding sources, and whether dual identity is allowed. The choice of destination country is not based on the "popularity" on the promotional page, but on whether it matches the family's life, education, and business plans for the next five to ten years. The second is the funding threshold and proof logic. Investment projects have clear investment amounts, but the real difficulty lies in proving the source of funds - how the money was earned, how it was accumulated in compliance, and whether it can be explained clearly. This part often affects the application pace more than the investment amount itself. The third is the time cycle. From preparing materials to obtaining identity, it can be as short as a few months or as long as several years, and families need to push back their target time points. The fourth is educational integration. The age, grade level, and language proficiency of children determine when their identity can be obtained before they can use it. The fifth is tax residency status. Obtaining a certain country's status does not automatically mean becoming a tax resident of that country. Whether actual residence is required, how many days of residence, and how to declare domestic income all need to be calculated together with the tax advisor. The sixth is whether family members are traveling together, who applies first, and who retains domestic life. Many families end up with a structure where the main applicant obtains their identity first, the spouse and children accompany them, and the parents make separate arrangements for long-term visas.
Putting six dimensions together, immigration is no longer a multiple-choice question, but a troubleshooting question: which one is a hard constraint and which one can be compromised requires consensus within the family before aligning with external professionals.
3、 Where is the information gap and why is offline communication still important
The information available online for identity planning is mostly framework based: which projects are available in a certain country, investment ranges, and approximate cycles. But when it comes to specific families, the question is all about details: Does my company's dividend count as a compliant source of funds? Can the child connect with their sophomore year? How many days of residence after obtaining identity will affect domestic taxation? These questions cannot be concluded from ten guides, as the answers depend on the family's own asset structure, the child's academic status, and the nationality arrangement of both spouses.

This is precisely where the value of offline expos lies. The Overseas Immigration Study and Property Expo, as well as the Enterprise Overseas Development and Financial Services Expo, will be held at the Shanghai World Trade Exhibition Center from November 20th to 22nd, 2026. It will bring together project parties from different legal jurisdictions, cross-border tax consultants, study abroad planning agencies, and overseas property service providers for a three-day conference. A family can do several things on site: first compare the real conditions of several destination country projects horizontally at different booths, then discuss with a tax consultant about the residency obligations after obtaining the identity, and then ask about the needs for studying abroad and real estate together. About 8000 people are expected to attend in three days, which means there are enough exhibitors from different countries and project types on site for families to screen according to their own constraints.
For exhibitors, most of the families who come to the venue have already passed the stage of "whether or not to know", generally bringing their own family situation and time nodes, and the communication efficiency is much higher than general online consultation.
4、 Provide a sequence of actions for the family under consideration
Instead of rushing to compare projects, it's better to think about three things within the family first. Firstly, write down what the family hopes to solve the most in the next five years, whether it is education, assets, transportation, or alternative living options. Secondly, clarify whether the family's financial structure and sources of funds can be reasonably explained. Thirdly, reverse the timeline, which year the child will go out, which year the company will go abroad, and which year they hope to obtain their identity. After clarifying these three things, looking at the specific project will make the judgment much faster.
Overseas identity planning is not a product that can make impulsive decisions, it is more like a long-term arrangement for a family. Breaking down this matter and examining it clearly is more important than hastily choosing a country.
