New Pattern of Cross border Wealth Management in 2026: How High Net Worth Families Allocate Overseas Assets After Hong Kong Surpasses Switzerland

“ The BCG report shows that Hong Kong's cross-border wealth management scale has reached $2.95 trillion, surpassing Switzerland for the first time. 45% of high net worth individuals in China have allocated overseas financial products, with overseas insurance, banking, and stocks being the main categories. At the Shanghai Financial Services Exhibition in November, we will connect with private banks, home offices, and insurance institutions. ”

The Boston Consulting Group's 2026 Global Wealth Report shows that the cross-border wealth managed in Hong Kong reached $2.95 trillion, a year-on-year increase of 10.7%, surpassing Switzerland for the first time to become the world's leading cross-border wealth management center. Behind this data is the structural growth in the demand for cross-border asset allocation among high net worth households in China. According to the Hurun Report White Paper, 45% of the surveyed high net worth individuals have allocated overseas financial products, with overseas assets accounting for an average of 20% of total assets. This article outlines several main themes of cross-border wealth management in 2026.

1、 The demand has shifted from 'buying products' to' making plans'

In the past, high net worth families discussed cross-border allocation, with the focus on which stocks and funds to buy. The demand for 2026 will significantly upgrade: from purchasing a single product, expanding to global asset allocation, corporate overseas financial services, children's education fund arrangements, family inheritance, tax planning, insurance protection, and cross-border life management.

According to a survey conducted by HSBC Insurance on 908 high net worth individuals in nine major markets in Asia and the Middle East, 94% of high net worth individuals are currently using or considering using at least one international financial center, with an average layout of 4.5 international financial centers, concentrated in the three major hubs of Hong Kong, Singapore, and the United States.

In terms of product preferences, overseas insurance accounts for 28%, banking products account for 20%, and stocks account for 17%. In terms of regional selection, Hong Kong, China has become the core destination with a 52% share, followed closely by Singapore with 40% and the United States with 35%.

2、 Several compliance changes that cannot be ignored

1、 Offshore trust declaration is becoming stricter. In 2026, tax collection will promote the compliance of cross-border asset allocation, and offshore trusts need to declare income details. The previous practice of 'building an offshore structure without declaration' is no longer feasible.

2、 CRS information exchange continues to operate. The account information of Chinese tax residents in overseas financial institutions will be exchanged back to the domestic tax authorities through the CRS mechanism. Truthful declaration and compliant taxation are prerequisites for long-term holding of overseas assets.

3、 As of the end of April 2026, the Hong Kong 'New Capital Investment Entrant Scheme' has received nearly 3600 applications and is expected to bring approximately HKD 108 billion in investment to Hong Kong. This plan simultaneously addresses both identity and asset allocation, and is a hot topic for high net worth families in 2026.

3、 The configuration logic of different families

Business owner's family: The focus is on arranging overseas capital for the enterprise, cross-border guarantees, family control structure, and inheritance planning.

Professional families: The focus is on the reserve of funds for children's education, the path of overseas housing funds, and the diversification of retirement income currencies.

Venture capital exits households: The focus is on fund collection, multi currency allocation, and long-term stable assets after equity exit.

The configuration goals, risk tolerance, and time periods of the three types of households are different, and cannot use the same product list. A common misconception is that putting all money in one currency, one product category, and one country may seem simple, but in reality, the concentration risk is high.

4、 The realistic threshold for family offices and offshore trusts

Family offices are not only available to ultra-high net worth families. In 2026, the threshold for establishing a single family office in Hong Kong and Singapore is relatively clear, but maintenance costs (including office rent, professional team, compliance audits) range from tens of thousands to millions of Hong Kong dollars per year. For families with investable assets in the tens of millions of RMB range, a multi family office (MFO) is a more practical choice.

In terms of offshore trusts, the establishment and maintenance costs are also not low, and professional lawyers and tax consultants need to be continuously involved. Suitable for families with clear inheritance needs and complex asset structures. If it's just simple asset diversification, overseas insurance and multi currency deposit accounts may be lighter starting points.

5、 Functional boundaries of several common products

Overseas savings dividend insurance: suitable for long-term stable savings and children's education fund reserves, usually held for more than 5 years to see compound interest effects, not suitable for short-term funds.

Multi currency bank deposits: suitable for fund transfer and short-term liquidity management, with interest rates fluctuating with the market. The main functions are account convenience and currency switching.

Overseas stocks and funds: Suitable for investors with certain investment experience and the ability to withstand market fluctuations, they need to pay attention to exchange rate risk and transaction costs.

Offshore trusts and family offices: Suitable for families with large asset sizes, inheritance and tax planning needs, they are structured tools, not single wealth management products.

Understanding the functional boundaries of each product category is more important than simply comparing returns. A common misconception is to treat insurance as stock speculation and deposits as investments, ultimately failing to please both parties.

6、 November Shanghai Financial Services Exhibition: Connecting Private Banks, Home Offices, and Insurance Institutions

From November 20th to 22nd, 2026, the Overseas Immigrant Study and Property Expo, as well as the Enterprise Overseas Development and Financial Services Expo, will be held at the Shanghai World Trade Exhibition Center for three days, with an expected attendance of about 8000 visitors. The financial services section of the exhibition invites private banks, family offices, overseas insurance institutions, cross-border investment banks, trust companies, and cross-border payment and settlement service providers to participate.

Business owners and high net worth families present can complete on-site tasks such as cross-border account opening consultation, insurance plan comparison, preliminary communication on home office architecture, and docking of financial solutions for enterprises going global. For participating financial institutions, a significant proportion of the 8000 attendees gathered at the three-day exhibition are customers with genuine cross-border financial needs, making it an important customer acquisition channel for the year.
